Retro therapy 4.5
A heartfelt, loving, optimistic, colourful cross generational journey of discovery. Yvonne, a grandmother whose daughter Colette has died, is diagnosed with Alzheimers and forgets that Colette is no longer around. Manon, granddaughter, channels her late mum's style and fills the void felt by Yvonne, bringing the two much closer together. The conundrum at the heart of the plot centres on what's best for Yvonne, clinical care, or family's love.
The plot may become a touch busy in the second half where it sheds a small amount of it's simplistic charm, but the film explores Alzheimers' effects deftly through accomplished performances. With great use of music, a Ken Loach-esque feel and a closing line that lives long in the memory, this was a winner for me.
