Maria Montessori 4
This is one of those very important stories. One of a brave woman and a wonderful revolutionary educator, to whom we all owe a debt. The script focuses on the case of a French harlot who has disowned her illegitimate child for reasons of special needs. When the two are forced together again, she is brought to an institute for special needs children, run by the titular Maria and Giuseppe.
Maria is a woman, taking the role of a man, and as such is not paid for her inspirational work, yet she is no less committed to helping 'idiot' children who would otherwise be cast out of society. She sees past their exteriors and treats them like any other class, with results that far exceed any expectations of the fiercely misogynistic society of the turn of the 20th century.
With so many interesting dynamics besides the main characters to be explored, this film could be an hour longer and it likely would be time well spent. Like others such as The Imitation Game, I think everyone should see films like this, about real, inspirational historic people that helped to shape all our lives.
