Ghost in the Shell (1995)

The film that showed the world what Japanese Anime could do, and inspired countless filmmakers including the Wachowski's in their making of The Matrix, and James Cameron who said of it; 'the first truly adult animation film to reach a level of literary and visual excellence'. In the age of technology integrated humans, we follow a special police force investigation into a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master, who is remotely taking over people anf hijacking their bodies (shells) to carry out tasks. The wonderful script asks questions of identity in a technologically advanced world, making it particularly current today.

End of Watch (2012)

Realistic, semi-documentary style police drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as officers and close partners Taylor and Zavala. Director David Ayer (Fury, Suicide squad) was not convinced by thier performances initially, so sent them away to complete extensive police training together cultivating genuine chemistry before filming started, making their relationship not only believable but charming. Whilst bonding and carrying out their day to day duties, the two stumble upon and get embroiled in a brutal gangland war in L.A.

The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

A clever and surprisingly meta take on the conventions of the history of horror cinema. A group of teenagers including the stereotypical jock (Chris Hemsworth), cheerleader, pothead and virgin are holidaying in an isolated cabin in the woods with more at play than meets the eye. In one of many nods to The Evil Dead, they read a chant they find in a mysterious book in the cabin basement, prompting evil forces to attack and pick them off, leaving them fighting to survive and attempt their escape. The film uses horror film staples that the most casual filmgoer will be familiar with, but still has genuine surprises in a plot fill of twists and turns and a fresh take on the well trodden concept.

Nil by Mouth 1997

It has been five days since watching this, Gary Oldman's only directorial offering, and I think I have probably thought about it in one...
