Upcoming films on TV

Saturday (26/11)            00:40   Film4

Ghost in the Shell (1995)

The film that showed the world what Japanese Anime could do, and inspired countless filmmakers including the Wachowski's in their making of The Matrix, and James Cameron who said of it; 'the first truly adult animation film to reach a level of literary and visual excellence'. In the age of technology integrated humans, we follow a special police force investigation into a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master, who is remotely taking over people anf hijacking their bodies (shells) to carry out tasks. The wonderful script asks questions of identity in a technologically advanced world, making it particularly current today.

Sunday (20/11)             12:45   ITV                         Babe (1995)

James Cromwell stars as the farmer of few words Hoggett in the Australian sleeper hit about a runt piglet who makes farmyard friends through his relentless kindness and kind manner and becomes a contest winning sheep dog. In addition to the uncommonly likeable story, hints of philosophy and worthy themes of kindness and perseverance elevate this from a run of the mill children's animal-based adventure and has left it securely in the cultural zeitgeist. Adapted from 'The Sheep Pig' by Dick King-Smith.

'That'll do pig'

Sunday (20/11)              21:00   Sky Arts                 Double Indemnity (1944)

As classic Hollywood golden age Noirs go, Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity is among the most revered. Fred Macmurray plays an insurance salesman who, during a routine client meeting, meets Barbara Stanwyck, the disgruntled wife of a man who has just taken out a large life insurance policy. A plot arises to do away with him and collect the winnings. Things seem to go to plan at first, but a dogged claims inspector, Edward G. Robinson, begins to grow suspicious. Co-written by Wilder and Raymond Chandler, the film was nominated for 7 oscars.

Wednesday (23/11)       23:10   ITV4                       The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Martin Scorsese shocked filmgoers with this totally undiluted, unapologetically adult telling of the career of real life stock market trader cum fraudster Jordan Belfort, who made millions selling unregulated stocks over the phone to unsuspecting clients for enormous commissions. Leonardo DiCaprio, alongside Margot Robbie, Jonah Hill and Matthew McConaughey, takes us through Jordan's drug fuelled ups and downs in his most subversive form. There is an argument that the film lacks depth, but to quote myself; IF the purpose of a film is purely to entertain the viewer, then few others I've ever seen do their job as well as wolfie.

Nil by Mouth 1997

It has been five days since watching this, Gary Oldman's only directorial offering, and I think I have probably thought about it in one...
