Saturday (24/9) 23:50 BBC1 Boyz N the Hood (1991)
Nominated for director and screenplay oscars, Boyz is a wonderfully affecting drama from the late writer/director John Singleton in his directorial debut. Starring Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Laurence Fishbourne, the film follows their community trapped in a lifestyle of violence, crime and gangs culture in South Central, Los Angeles. The film is necessarily unflinching but sympathetic to their plight and uses great performances and genuine emotional attachment to elevate it's material beyond just another ghetto film. Roger Ebert ranked this as one of the top 10 films of 1991.
