Monday (1/8) 21:00 5 Star Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Quentin Tarantino's unsubtle, marmite style may not be to everybody's tastes, but all of his considerable skills are brought together in an undeniably entertaining way through his writing and directing of this reimagining of World War 2 history. A clan of Nazi Hunters hatch a plot to take down the powers of the Third Reich, with his panache for OTT violence and dialogue on full show. Alongside the likes of Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender, the star of the show is the deservedly Oscar Winning performance by then mostly unknown Christoph Waltz as SS Colonel Hans Landa, who hits acting heights here that many others can only dream of, none higher than in the sublime opening scene, his interrogation of a suspected Nazi harbourer.
Sunday (31/7) 23:30 BBC1 Invictus (2009)
Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman star in the true story of the South African rugby team's World Cup victory in 1995. The story focuses on the integral relationship between Springboks team captain Francois Pienaar (Damon) and then South African President Nelson Mandela (Freeman) who strives to unite the starkly divided country using the universal appeal of one of the national sports. Both men must overcome racial prejudice and political backlash to achieve the goal, and make news all over the world.
Sunday (31/7) 12:50 ITV4 Groundhog Day (1993)
Harold Ramis' iconic comedy about a disillusioned news channel journalist, played by Bill Murray in his trademark bone-dry style, who is sent on an assignment to a town that relies on a local groundhog to predict prevailing weather. He inexplicably becomes stuck in a loop, repeating the same day over and over, while all others are obliviois. After reacting in a myriad of different ways, he uses this as an opportunity for good, to voice his true feelings to his colleagues and eventually wear down love interest Andie MacDowell. Since it's release, the film has become something of a comedy touchstone, and has secured it's place in the cultural zeitgeist.
