Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki are a legendary pairing of Asian Animated cinema, and of Cinema in general. Either one on their own is a force to be reckoned with, and together they have created such animation milestones as Castle of Cagliostro, Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Spirited Away - all of which are rightly considered stone cold classics.
I was excited to find Porco Rosso BluRay in a charity shop last week, and expected to love it, which I did. It convinced me that Ghibli consistently offer what are probably (Manga classics like Akira would be in the conversation) the most stunning and visually satisfying animated films I have seen. This is an interesting topic to explore in fact - I will be sure to do so in the future.
The spider house from Howl's Moving Castle, the all but dormant robots on Laputa, and now the Aerial combat scenes and overhead images of the bay from Porco Rosso are all burnt into my memory, in a similar way to how shots of Barry Lyndon, Oldboy and La Haine live in my mind and pop into my consciousness, seemingly, when they feel like it. It's a wonderful affliction to have.
