Better Davis lives under the iron hand of her high society mother and, as a result, has been denied a childhood. She seems to be having a mental breakdown due to the unbearable pressure so is admitted to Claude Rains' facility for recuperation. She emerges entirely transformed, at least on the outside, much to the dismay of her family. It is a very strong film indeed.
An early scene caught my attention especially. Bette Davis and her sailor flame are caught in one of her 'favourite trysting places... a particular limousine' on the freight deck of a ship they are travelling on. They have found privacy in the back seat of this covered car, which put me in mind of Jack and Rose in Titanic. I wonder if James Cameron took inspiration from this scene whilst coming up with this?
