I have just enjoyed a screening of Charlie Chaplin's 1936 classic Modern times, the first feature of the brand new Eclectic Cinema season, at Cheltenham Playhouse. The show was a success with an obviously happy audience, sure to return, as am I, for the next film in the series; Buster Keaton's The General.
No review here (I always want to let a film sit, at least overnight before making my mind up) but I can confidently say that I fully understand it's classic status. It is totally deserved.. it's funny, touching, creative and genius at times. Having seen a selection of Chaplin's much earlier shorts, I had a decent idea of what to expect, but i am very glad to say that this did indeed exceed all expectations.
