I found this film on Blu-ray in a charity shop, and although I had never heard of it, it's a 1940s French black and white drama from a revered director so I was sure it would be worth having in my collection.
It was a very good film, with great performances and a couple of moments that have stuck in my mind since. Choef amongst which are close ups of Maria Casares as the Helene, the scheming, put out partner of Paul Bernard's Jean, who just can't resist playing the field, to his detriment. There is a line where the girl says to the guy 'do you like the rain that much' and he says back 'is it raining?' I wonder if that inspired that unspeakably awful moment between Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell in Four Weddings and a Funeral? I like noticing inspiration for moments that have been made well known since, even if they are as cringe-worthy as this one.
