Last Tango in Paris (1972)

Writer's picture: FilmKnightFilmKnight

I recently watched Last Tango in Paris for the first time, after having a DVD copy for years which only had Portuguese subtitles, and with alot of the dialogue being in French, I was lost.

I had heard of the film mostly in reference to the infamous butter rape scene (if you Google it, the second search suggestion is 'last tango in Paris butter') and the lasting effects on the mental health and reputation on the actress involved, Maria Schneider. I actually thought the scene in question was relatively mild, not only in what is shown visually, but the tone and the character's relationship. For me, there are much more disturbing rape scenes, including Straw Dogs, Last house on the left and Redacted.

Otherwise the film was wall acted, interestingly shot, and clearly rightly controversial, which I appreciate, but not overly memorable really. I felt similarly about the only other Bernard Bertilucci film I have seen, The Last Emperor, which I preferred overall.

An interesting side-throught; This was released in 1972, the same year as the Godfather, also with Marlon Brando of course. I wonder which of the two he would have guessed would be the most successful and influential at the time? History has proven of course.
