Gilda (1946)

I had heard of Gilda through my love for Mulholland Drive (much more on this one another time) In the film, Laura Harring has lost her memory and is asked her name. She sees a poster for Gilda starring Rita Hayworth - so for most of the rest of the film she is known as Rita. Also a scene from Gilda is shown in Shawshank, so it clearly has pedigree.

I liked it overall, it was interesting, well acted, very well shot and great looking. But.. but... There was an elephant in the room. A large, fairly intrusive, Casablanca shaped elephant. The story ingredients are very similar to the Bogart and Bergmann classic; It involves a love triangle of a beautiful, glamorous woman and two men, her old and new flames. One owns an illegal gambling institution, the other is something of an outlaw. It was set against the backdrop of war, with one of the parties close to the local police - who become integral to the plot. The story isn't the same and Gilda has a slightly more pessimistic tone - but i couldn't escape the feeling that they were so similar.

I wonder if any others felt the same? And is there any reason for it- do the two films may share a lineage?
