So the Eclectic Cinema had started again in 2023, last night's screening was Jean-luc Godard's Pierrot le Fou. I had seen it once before so knew roughly what to expect, although that may not help to make any more sense of the film.. it is an utterly abstract meditation on... life i.e. seemingly everything. The bare bones of the plot resemble such classics as Badlands and Wild at Heart - a couple of outlaws on the lam and (for fetter or worse) in love.
Abstract can be a great thing - I'm a huge David Lynch fan. His films seem to hold together and thrive through their abstract-ness.. where as Pierrot seems like a meandering tale with only brief moments that seem to have meaning to be found, and therefore interest to be cultivated. Alot of the film is enjoyable and indivudual images and shots are beautiful and memorable but overall it seemed inconsequential. Of course it's likely I missed the point or points, but unlike Lynch, it seemed like if you missed a minute here or there then most likely nothing would be lost. You must allow yourself to be swept away by it, then it will be over. Lynch will live long in the memory whilst you subconsciously try to unpack it all, pierrot is already unpacked and messily spread all over the floor.
There are a few clever dialogue quotes I had to make note of;
'I've decided to never fakk in love again. It's a disgusting habit'
'It's a good thing I don't like spinach. Cos if I did I'd eat it, and I can't stand the stuff'
'Why do you look so sad?...
Because you talk to me with words, and I look at you with feelings'
It is colourful, inscrutable and experiential.
It occurred me towards the end that it could all be a mental breakdown of the main character, funny, since watching it sometimes feels like one.
