Dogtooth 2009

Writer's picture: FilmKnightFilmKnight

I liked Dogtooth alot. I can see how it became a directorial calling card for Yorgos Lanthimos, who has since become a big name and a purveyor of the ultra stylised and unusual. Alot of the joy of the film was in the details of the world that was created by the parents to protect the children, and how those rich details made the hard to believe situation entirely believable.

Once it had finished, my main thoughts about the lasting effects reminded me of the 1998 Iranian film the apple. In a way it explores similar themes, but is very different indeed, there is not a single comedic fibre in it. As with Dogtooth, after seeing it I found myself thinking about whether the actions of the parents were unfortunately nevessary or unnecessary cruel - were they protecting or imprisoning? And in either case, what wed the reason?
