I couldn't get into this one - I wasnt interested in the story or setting, and the pious nature didn't appeal to me atall. It's hard to fully explain why as it was technically fine but very slow moving and sparse with little to really latch on to. Story wise - the estranged brother of a local holy man turns up years after being ostracised by the community for previous transgressions. Tensions run high in the town when most see him as unforgiveable but his family try to look beyond the past.
It did occur to me that because it was somewhat based on actual events, or more accurately set to a backdrop of real events, perhaps prior knowledge of the background to the plot would have helped - although if that were the case, that would arguably be a fault of the film, not the audience.
In fairness, some moments felt powerful and full of depth even though I wasn't invested and there were some nice shots but in truth not enough to rescue it. It had the feel of a film that relied on the mood to engage the audience, but I found it lacking in that area also. Whatever it was aiming for, it missed the mark, overall it just left me cold.
I have said many times that perhaps the nost important thing a film can do is stick in your head once it's finished - I had all but forgotten The Taste of Apples by the next day
