CIFF 2023: Last Dance

After Lise, a mother, grandmother and wife to Germain dies suddenly and unexpectedly, he tries to keep her memory alive by living in her shoes - this means joining her contempary dance group. The film is hardly atall about dance, although I liked the final performance very much.

Part of the core of the story deals with the family reaction to Lise's death. Germain has sons and daughters who all rally around to help him through this difficult time - in theory at least. The children bicker between themselves about how best to support their dad and when, bombard him with phone calls and meals, and generally make a nuisance of themselves.

It could have verged on silly comedy, but it walked the line between comic and dramatic well to retain the emotional involvement. Above all it was a feel good film, which i could happily watch again. It was a sweet tale of loss and grief, resilience and preserverance with some sincere and clever humour. It didn't do enough for a particularly high score, but what it did do, was done well.
